Anker Soundcore Life Q20

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 Headphones A3025041

$59.99

The Life Q20 Headphones by Anker are a continuation of their wide-ranging and lauded Soundcore line that brings with it some of the same qualities we’ve come to expect, for better or worse. Great battery life, excellent noise cancelling, solid build quality all distinguish the Q20, with only the typical detractions of interesting color and finish choices and a lack of a hard carrying case in favor of including a dust-bag bringing a strong package down. -T42

  • Distinctions - Life Q20 is a masterclass in the functional elements of good over-the-ear headphones. Sound quality is crisp and distinct, albeit not mind-blowing or paradigm altering, with range that makes bass-heavy songs sound as pronounced and distinct as lighter audio-fare like podcasts. However, Anker does not neglect quality of life as well, providing shockingly good fast charging with greater maximum charge than similar competitors, in addition to extremely effective noise-cancelling aided by a comfortable sealed over-the-ear fit. Add additionally that the Life Q20 has microphone integration for hands-free calls a serious contender has fully made its debut.

Criticisms - The Life Q20 does not have much to criticize other than LED indicator lights remain brightly constantly on in a somewhat obtrusive manner in low-light environments. As during wear it is clear if headphones are on and noise cancellation is active, lights are not necessary, but this is an incredibly small criticism. Obviously when compared to more studio-grade headphones the Q20’s competent but unremarkable sound fails to impress, but within its space it is well above average.

  • Distinctions - Much stronger build quality and design choices than other comparable headphones from peers. While the Q20 does pivot and fold for ease of storage, moving points feel distinctively sturdier than many peers, while when locked in the use position the whole package feels solid with minimal flex. Durable plastic shell feels weighty, with the matte finish being decently scratch resistant, while also not showing damage that pushes through the barrier.

Criticisms - The Life Q20 does have some flex while folded that may not inspire total confidence in the strength of the build when frequently used and abused. Pigments and finish in the Q20 did not age well, with wear and blemishes gradually becoming apparent as contrast slowly increased between sunfaded plastic and damage.

  • Distinctions - The Life Q20 is wholly unobtrusive in any environment, coupling a matte finish with a somewhat frosted look that evokes powder coating. With other offerings in a deep blue and a bright silver, the color ways provided maintain a business professional style while still offering color choices that are vibrant and unique.

Criticisms - Sunfading is a double edged weakness for the Life Q20. With not particularly saturated stock colors on black and blue color ways, sunfading becomes apparent within a few months of consistent use outside. Similarly, as sunfading increases, small damages like scuffs and scratches begin to show clearly as contrast increases between blemish and product color.

  • Distinctions - Anker via Soundcore furnishes the Life Q20 with a detachable aux cord and a micro-USB charging cable that are not bespoke to the design of the headphones, allowing further use outside of the product.

Criticisms - Unfortunately there are few real distinctions in sustainability for the Q20, the inseparable nature of the electronics and the plastic case ensure that recycling is complicated enough the average consumer will likely resort to disposal. As of now, Anker does not have a buyback or recycling program to provide the Life Q20 some additional use.

  • Distinctions - Anker creates a dream combination of all the real functional qualities desired in a pair of mid-range bluetooth headphones, stellar battery life, solid build, strong audio quality and great noise cancelling, its hard to find a peer that does not compromise on at least one of those fronts to its own detriment. Altogether the Life Q20 feels engineered to impress for a long time to come, choosing to stand on raw quality over gimmicks or flashy design.

Criticisms - While the included dust bag is better than nothing, with bluetooth headphones marketed for commuters who find themselves regularly stowing and packing a folding pair of headphones, a hard-case would likely provide greater longevity and some consumer peace of mind.
