Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation)

Apple Watch SE 2nd Generation MNTF3LL/A Silver Case, Midnight Strap

$249.99

The Second Generation Apple Watch SE is a well-rounded smartwatch that keeps giving over a longer lifespan than many peers. While not necessarily reinventing the wheel when it comes to feature offerings, fine tuning of the previous generation’s formula has resulted in a fitness tracker that stays precise under more stressful conditions in an even tighter package than ever before. While more expensive options from Apple or Garmin might offer a few more features, the second generation SE gives easily one of the best cost-to-value situations across the space. -T42

  • Distinctions - Apple’s UI is still undefeated for accessibility and optimization, maintaining hallmarks of previous releases while improving performance and accuracy. While on its own their Fitness app or Fitness+ subscription can feel a little barebones, Apple’s padding by seamlessly integrating apps like Strava or Map My Run and their generated data results in an user experience with far more choice and customization than many peers with either developer specific apps or sloppy, poorly optimized ports. Many new thoughtful design choices are also quietly present, like the more refined haptic feedback that gives specific vibrations that aid in differentiating notifications between fitness apps, messages and phone calls without even looking at your wrist.

Criticisms - The SE2’s performance is limited somewhat by Apple’s decision to make features like blood oxygen measurement and ECG functionality exclusive to the more expensive Series 8 and Ultra. While more advanced features like these as well as more specific features like the Oceanic+ dive computer may be only desired by those interested in more extreme hobbies, their lack of inclusion in a model marketed as the sporty choice in the line may put prospective buyers off the Apple Watch line to avoid paying three times as much for the much larger Ultra for those specific features.

  • Distinctions - SE2 brings slightly different materials than its ancestor, as well as a slightly reduced profile, but not at the cost of durability. Remarkably light, the aluminum case remains sturdy after extended abuse. Another slightly updated piece since the previous generation, the digital crown glides smoothly while still displaying the tight build that makes the SE2 sturdier than its predecessors and peers. Tactile feedback on the button element, as well as the haptic feedback provided by the watch itself is finely tuned and still distinct after extended use.

Criticisms - The largest downside to the SE2 is the vulnerability of the front glass, a problem also present in its predecessor. While the screen is scratch resistant, the nature of the screen not being recessed for a more sleek design led to inevitable scratching and divets, especially when being used outdoors to the full extent of its tracking capabilities. Unfortunately, as of the date this article was last updated, Apple does not itself offer a case or screen protector to extend the lifespan of the glass, which is unfortunate, and with the cost of repair for just glass $199 without AppleCare, it comes across like a deliberate push to the ‘economy’ alternative of an AppleCare+ subscription that covers accidental glass damage.

  • Distinctions - Apple does what it does best by making a sleek and aesthetically pleasing package that offers case colors that are distinct, yet all neutral enough to look at home in most environments from business casual to exercise. Removable and customizable bands feed into the ecosystem, and while the price of certain individual bands may make them less appealing, material quality and robust colors are present across all we tested and viewed in person.

Criticisms - Damage to the glass became extremely apparent after initial damage, and was visible from a distance. While stronger glass resisted damage longer than previous releases, it still sustained visible damage within the first month.

  • Distinctions - The most distinctive aspect of the new Apple Watch SE comes via clear and intentional design around sustainability and longevity. Apple advertised a fully recycled aluminum housing as a taster, but the full entrée comes in the suite of preventative measures for preserving the lifespan of the SE; battery life is improved to the point that the SE under standard use (with exercise programs as well) for around two days, giving it significant margin for gradual loss of full battery capacity. While fast charging is not necessarily conducive to battery health, at least the forethought of making sure the battery allows regular functionality even when decayed halfway. Similar to past releases, Apple has also improved and updated the interchangeable bands, allowing for further use even after accessories may become damaged. While this offering may seem expected, many peers still offer permanently integrated bands on their trackers, which often can leave the entire package non-functional long before the actual tracker breaks down. Separately, Apple also offers a very comprehensive recycling program for legacy watches even after trade-in value depreciates at their own expense, which is admirable compared to most of their fitness tracking peers.

Criticisms - Prohibitively high cost of replacing the damaged glass on the screen may lead to many just replacing the entire device to avoid not only the cost but the lengthy hassle of a replacement. While the idea of AppleCare+ does attract some, the proportionally high cost of protection to the watch will deter some customers from the subscription, leading to many devices reparably damaged, but thrown out due to cost-efficiency.

  • Distinctions - Apple’s suite of programs and presentation of a tight and functional package is attractive to the more casual user who also finds themselves getting active after work or recreationally. Smooth integration of lifestyle features and provision of outside developer app integrations furnishes the SE with even more day-to-day functionality than ever seen before. Similarly, associated value for cost in functionality and quality increases visibility compared to peers and even Apple’s own more expensive watches.

Criticisms - Shorter than average battery life incurred by high power usage for performance processor, bright screen and accurate sensor data. While it is appropriate to the intended use of the Apple Watch SE, some consumers may prefer a watch they have to recharge less often at the cost of functionality and presentation. Lack of inclusion of certain more detailed features like Oceanic+ or an equivalent may also put more extreme outdoorsmen off in favor of more functional contemporaries.
