BeatsByDre Beats Studio Pro (Navy)
BeatsByDre Beats Studio Pro (Navy)
$349.99
The Beats Studio Pro are the highest end, both in price and quality of BeatsByDre’s current offerings. Designed with the aim of being the sporty over-ear equivalent of partner Apple’s Airpod Max headphones, the Beats Studio Pro are less of a rival and more of an alternative, offering less of a distinct style in favor of a lighter chassis, more portability, and a more distinct color suite. However, performance is very similar, with 40-hour battery life, similar audio range and easy integration into the Apple ecosystem. With a price tag much more akin to peers outside of the Apple umbrella, the Beats Studio Pro headphones are a solid offering with some special features for Apple users. -T42
-
Distinctions - Beats Studio Pro check all of the boxes of contemporary bluetooth headphones, with solid noise cancellation, battery life that will likely exceed use time between charges, voice control options and a folding design. Notably improved sound dampening from the Solo line makes its debut, but a provided transparency mode makes swapping from ambient noises to media listening as easy as a long button press. Bass, treble and mids are all very acceptable in both clarity and range.
Criticisms - Volume and track controls are not ideal, being combined on a single ‘D-pad’ control, which makes changes during active moments inconsistently effective. Microphone quality is less than stellar as well, continuing a trend for BeatsByDre, but particularly egregious when comparing the Beats Studio Pro to the AirPods Max, which seems to be the intended comparison. A notable lack of inclusion of the H1 or W1 chips made popular by others in the Apple headphone range does make the Beats Studio Pro somewhat of a technological outlier.
-
Distinctions - Hard plastic chassis is more durable than previous generations, making the Beats Studio Pro also the strongest of BeatsByDre’s historical offerings. Clicky and tactile buttons with tight machining give a solid feel to the moving parts of the build, while the joints of the band also communicate a sturdy feeling during use.
Criticisms - The largest material issue is perhaps the most visually obvious, cheaper plastic with no protective coating looks cheap, waxy and makes fingerprints or grime incredibly apparent and difficult to get rid of.
-
Distinctions - BeatsByDre offers the Beats Studio Pro in a unique group of more subdued hues, including the rich navy on this model. A matte color palette across the chassis and controls is cohesive and more at home in professional settings than many peers.
Criticisms - Greasy textures on the plastic make fingerprints and other grime incredibly apparent across the matte tones. Similarly, matte tones are wholly unremarkable for buyers looking for more individual, vivid color customization. Those looking to use the Beats Studio Pro in gym settings may notice discoloration and streaking with sweat.
-
Distinctions - The Beats Studio Pro are stronger than the entry-level offerings by BeatsByDre, making their average lifespan greater than lower-price peers.
Criticisms - Plastic chassis and flexible joints are vulnerable, specifically more vulnerable than peers, making the Beats Studio Pro more likely to break and be subsequently trashed. While plastic is recyclable, electronic internals are connected to a degree that makes disassembly involved beyond the capabilities of the average consumer.
-
Distinctions - Compared to its peers, the Beats Studio Pro is easily the most smoothly compatible with Apple products. Audio quality is good, though somewhat average for the space the MSRP recommends it in. The feature suite is largely similar to many wireless peers at comparable prices, with no clear deficits.
Criticisms - The Beats Studio Pro fail to stand out amongst other wireless headphones in any real meaningful way; they have good sound, an okay build quality and decent functionality, but they aren't particularly impressive in any avenue. Their look is similar--the Navy being flat and waxy is certainly not garish or flashy, but lacks the sophistication or function of different materials that would suggest it as a premium product. While these may be more of a bargain if they can be found on sale, as they often are, the Beats Studio Pro are another just okay entry into a somewhat saturated space.
