Brother HLL2305W Monochrome Printer

$119.99

The Brother HLL2305W Monochrome Laser Printer is a simple workhorse, for better and worse. Brother ensures solid print quality and reliability, but at the expense of more glamorous features like an on-board scanner, auxiliary plug-ins and the obvious lack of colorful printing capability. However, for those looking to avoid the complications or commitments of more convoluted printers, the Brother HLL2305W might be a welcome simplification.

  • Distinctions - The main selling point for the Brother HLL2305W is the elegance of its simplicity. By keeping to a monochromatic system, Brother eliminates many of the vulnerabilities found present in peers. AirPrint compatibility, coupled with reliable printing through a sturdy mechanisms gives life to a product that is capable of printing 24 pages per minute almost indefinitely.

Criticisms - The HLL2305W by Brother does lack a number of features that are found in other home-office or budget solutions like a scanner or double-sided printing. Some users may also miss the ability to plug into the printer directly if they are not familiar with setting up the bespoke Brother software or installing Brother drivers. While not all-consuming, the single largest frustration to be found is the tendency of the Brother HLL2305W to fall into a ‘Deep Sleep’ mode that prevent automatic printing without manually touching the power button.

  • Distinctions - Without a doubt, the Brother HLL2305W can handle the abuse of regular use. With a tight package of build and function, the HLL2305W is incredibly durable and very efficient in both design and function. Print quality is very good, though not stellar, but incredibly consistent due to lack of complications in the print mechanism. On a different note, the matte plastic case does not show blemishes or scratches due to the thickness and hue of the space gray plastic.

Criticisms - Like many other printers, entry-level and otherwise, the HLL2305W is distinctly plastic. While the build is strong, all the vulnerabilities of plastic elements apply, as the protective shell will be breached by any accidents like dropping or violent collision.

  • Distinctions - The design language of the Brother HLL2305W is actually fairly aesthetically pleasing. The panel gaps are even, the edges are rounded and proportional, and the matte tones are neither waxy nor cheap looking. The prevalence of the space gray color is also convenient for cohesion within user environments, whether in a home office, a professional office, or simply stored on a shelf wherever convenient, the HLL2305W will not be obtrusive or garish, and will likely not distract from decor or patterns present.

Criticisms - Plastic finish is not wholly remarkable or beautiful like some other brushed aluminum builds on the market. Extremely small critique.

  • Distinctions - If nothing else, the Brother HLL2305W sips cartridges like no other. By simplifying to a single black high-capacity cartridge, Brother successfully focuses on tailoring the mechanism of the HLL2305W to print without excess. While frustrating as a feature, the tendency of the Brother HLL2305W to easily slip into the power -conserving ‘Deep Sleep’ mode is a boon to sustainability.

Criticisms - Obviously the production of ink and operation of the HLL2305W are neither ecologically sound nor sustainable. Paper is consumed with printing, ink has a tremendous footprint for development, and the actual printer itself consumes a decent amount of electricity. While par for course as far as printers, the effects of use are not negligible.

  • Distinctions - A sheer lack of complication coupled with extremely quality performance even under heavy use makes the Brother HLL2305W a standout for those looking to get away from over-complication and frustrating practices of ink subscriptions.

Criticisms - Lack of a total package in missing scan feature and ability to print color prevent the HLL2305W from being the perfect well-rounded package. A higher up-front cost, despite better longevity, may also dissuade those looking for a simple and inexpensive printer.
