Casio MQ24-7B2 Watch
$14.99
The Casio MQ24-7B2 is a delightfully inexpensive workhorse of a watch, an elegantly simple fusion of functionality and the purity of base form. -T42
-
Distinctions - The MQ24-7B2 by Casio is bestowed with a lot of a little. It is incredibly light, but still manages to pack a sense of sturdiness into the build feel. Included in this tight package is a bright white dial with vivid black numerals encased behind a resin glass ‘crystal,’ a choice that allows for visibility even in low light environments.
Criticisms - The MQ24-7B2 features a back that is tough to remove without the assistant of a watch tech, making battery replacement somewhat involved. Additionally, water resistant is not quantified by Casio, but in our testing did not prove to be deeper than a few meters. Similarly, a resin based scratch resistant glass piece resulted in visible scratching with time.
-
Distinctions - Casio provides the MQ24-7B2 with a number of quality functions for the price. Firstly, Casio timing is second to none, with all tested iterations of the MQ24-7B2 not losing time other than a single-digit number of seconds during the entirety of months of testing. More visibly on the day-to-day, the Casio MQ24-7B2 is extremely solid and well fitting, with the resin band preventing slipping while also resisting dirt, grime and stains.
Criticisms - The largest gripe to be had with the Casio MQ24-7B2 is that the resin glass is not particularly scratch resistant, nor does the inherent scratch resistance of the dial obscure or obfuscate large gouges and scratches that may be accrued through regular use.
-
Distinctions - A fusion of form and function, the MQ24-7B2 is nondescript enough to be at home in any setting, while not sacrificing the sense of character found in its plucky resilience and simplicity. With a slim silhouette and smaller 35mm case, the MQ24-7B2 takes up enough real estate to offer all the benefits of wearing a watch as an accessory without being ostentatious or weighty on the wrist.
Criticisms - Resin glass is clearly not crystal or glass, appearing somewhat cheap, albeit understandably so considering the MSRP.
-
Distinctions - Despite the trial of removing the back of the Casio MQ24-7B2, the battery is replaceable. Straps are interchangeable and entirely recyclable. Longevity also boosts the score of the MQ24-7B2, as the watch tends to outlive many of its peers of a similar or higher price point.
Criticisms - Sustainability is where the Casio MQ24-7B2 suffers the most, however, as the largely plastic and resin design, coupled with a battery and internals that are hard to access, and even harder to remove for recycling means it is likely not going to make it to recycling. A low intrinsic value also makes the second-hand market negligible.
-
Distinctions - For price, finding a watch that keeps such good time alongside great longevity is hard to find, but Casio’s long history of reliable performance from all of their movement types shines through in the MQ24-7B2.
Criticisms - Other similarly priced watches also have protections in place for their face in upgraded materials, with similarly priced alternatives having glass faces with scratch-proof coatings or treatments.
