LEGO’s alternative to the Funko returns with the BrickHeadz Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child 75317, reuniting the streaming show’s titular character with his iconic sidekick. While some elements of the designs could be refined, clear intentionality shines through in both designs, with either character being easily identifiable and a welcome addition to the collection of any LEGO or Star Wars aficionado. -T42

  • Distinctions - The remarkable distinction in the BrickHeadz line is not in their depiction of characters, but rather the clever use of the medium and related reusability. While other statues are limited to just display, posable elements and base composition of LEGO pieces means that the BrickHeadz Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child 75317 can become a part of any number of builds after you’re done displaying it as intended.

Criticisms - Some elements of proportion desired in a model are missing, with pieces like hands and appendages being nebulously not distinct from just another differently colored piece.

  • Distinctions - As with most LEGO sets, the LEGO BrickHeadz Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child #113 & #114 75317 incorporates strong pieces with tight tolerances and solid color palettes.

Criticisms - Weaker attachments of accessories like the darksaber hilt or rifle may disconnect during play, or completely disassemble with small falls or drops.

  • Distinctions - A concise depiction of both iconic characters, the LEGO BrickHeadz Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child 75317 keeps a sense of cartoonish proportion while emphasizing characteristic traits like Grogu’s large ears and the Mandalorian’s trademark helmet. Clear plastic pieces used on the hoverpram to convey floating are a great utilization of LEGO’s piece diversity.

Criticisms - Limits of the medium apply, with LEGO’s lack of fine detail being the limiting factor on this scale. Larger busts have been produced by LEGO that convey a design more accurately and identifiably, albeit at a higher cost. Other figures have either a more true-to-form scale representation or are more readily identifiable.

  • Distinctions - LEGO is, as ever, strong in reuse and recyclability. BrickHeadz Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child 75317 does not overdo bespoke or limited use special pieces, ensuring that every piece is easily usable with the rest of LEGO’s system. Fully plastic designs are easily recyclable if desired, though freedom of LEGO assembly allows for continued use in as many contexts as can be conceptualized.

Criticisms - As always, the criticism to be had with LEGO products is their plastic base, as well as traditionally recyclable, but still disposable paper instructions and ink-heavy retail packaging. Reuse, quality and longevity of LEGO pieces offsets the plastic cost, but considering the over-sized nature of the box versus the contents, reductions are possible.

  • Distinctions - The BrickHeadz line, and LEGO’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian & the Child 75317 by extension, are a clear and direct response to Funko in price, size and licensed character focus, however, they are better in nearly every way. Compared against Funko, the LEGO Brickheadz offer reuse, customization and product quality. While other figures will never be anything other than simply a display piece, BrickHeadz can be incorporated into any LEGO build in part or full. This particular pair of characters is also one of the few combination packages of figures available for this low of an MSRP.

Criticisms - LEGO is outdone in two places, one with form accuracy for those looking for a more detailed design, and two in play features. Despite modular accessories, the characters are not posable and have none of the articulation needed for more inventive play.
