LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148
$9.99
LEGO’s Technic Snow Groomer 42148 is a concise 2-in-1 representation of the basic iconic design of the snow groomer/SnowCat. Despite the small piece count, functional moving play features abound, but a barebones style and a slightly-off alternate build prevent the package from truly shining. -T42
-
Distinctions - The Snow Groomer comes equipped with a variety of moving functional parts, including a steering linkage, functional treads and a pair of adjustable plow elements. LEGO’s on-going bolstering of packages with alternate builds makes a quieter appearance as well in the 42148 Technic Snow Groomer, with a second build in a modified double-track snowmobile.
Criticisms - The snowmobile alternate build is somewhat weak proportionally and with design, though not the worst considering the relatively low piece count. Treads, while they do roll, are not particularly strong for aggressive play. The steering linkage, likely due to a smaller effective turning radius, is not something users will probably find themselves using regularly.
-
Distinctions - LEGO provides typically great build creativity across the whole and precise tolerances on the individual pieces. Typically Technic build elements are, as usual, attach extremely well and remain sturdy even with time.
Criticisms - Treads on the LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148 are not of the same quality of the rest of the pieces, being somewhat brittle due to thinness and complexity of form for application.
-
Distinctions - Aesthetically, the LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148 captures all the intricacies of a SnowCat design without much frill. Within the design itself, a color palette of vivid red and blue coupled with neutral grey and black pops. Frosted glass on the windshield element also is a nice addition to add to the aesthetic of snow usage.
Criticisms - Lack of complexity and distinct features makes the LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148 more functional than aesthetically pleasing, so those with larger sets on display may find themselves gravitating away from open display. The fairly unique color palette, coupled with the lack of additional colors that contrast well may also prevent some from wanting to display it amongst contrasting decorations in their own space.
-
Distinctions - LEGO is, as ever, strong in reuse and recyclability. Two distinct builds within the LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148 allow for longevity in building and play. This particular set does not overdo bespoke or limited use special pieces, ensuring that every piece is easily usable with the rest of LEGO’s system. Fully plastic designs are easily recyclable if desired, though freedom of LEGO assembly allows for continued use in as many contexts as can be conceptualized. The second set of instructions for the snowmobile is also made digital to avoid extra paper-use.
Criticisms - As always, the criticism to be had with LEGO products is their plastic base, as well as traditionally recyclable, but still disposable paper instructions and ink-heavy retail packaging. Reuse, quality and longevity of LEGO pieces offsets the plastic cost, but considering the over-sized nature of the box versus the contents, reductions are possible.
-
Distinctions - Hard to find a larger catalogue of products that are still legacy compatible with new sets like this one. Technic tolerances and elements set the standard for those looking to experiment with the complex capabilities of LEGO. The LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148 features not only a second build, but core pieces that allow for significant reuse afterwards.
Criticisms - Within the LEGO Technic Snow Groomer 42148, the alternate builds and complexity of the designs are not mind-blowing, particularly with similar sets more true to form available from even LEGO themselves. LEGO’s major complaint with aficionados is the gradual price inflation and decrease of set sizes. While other competitors compensate for poorer tolerances and less thoughtful designs with larger size, LEGO has maintained quality at the gradual expense of physical footprint and MSRP. This particular set, with its size and piece count, had comparable peers at two-thirds of the price from LEGO within the last decade.
