Tastemaker Score NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6 Dart Blaster

NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6

NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6 Dart Blaster

$9.99

NERF’s entry level blaster is a competent and cost-effective introduction to the world of NERF, that still offers typically NERF modular options for expansion and better than average longevity. While not redefining quality, sustainability or aesthetic standards, the NERF Elite 2.0 Commander RD-6 is an excellent way to get into a childhood staple. -T42

  • Distinctions - Simple six-shooter technology backed by solid range and room for more attachments makes the Commander RD-6 a well-rounded contender amongst more expensive peers that lack one of those essentials. Extra ammo also ensures those without other NERF or NERF compatible spares will be able to keep playing even after inevitable loss of darts.

Criticisms - While the intention is a cheap, bare-bones entry point, features like a pop-out loading system or sighting are noticeably absent, while quality of life additions that parents may look for like a safety switch or extra round storage are also not to be found.

  • Distinctions - For the price, finding a larger and more durable dart blaster is a tough ask, especially amongst the oversaturated market of inexpensive NERF knock-offs. Rotating barrel functionality moves well, and has a satisfying click to indicate when properly aligned with the firing mechanism.

Criticisms - When compared with more expensive models, the shot consistency for the RD-6 varies significantly in both distance and accuracy, while the build is also comprised of a lower-quality plastic in both thickness and luster. Like most of NERF’s ‘slam-fire’ blasters, internals that rely on thin metal springs and plastic receivers/firing mechanisms are less than durable with the drops and dings traditionally associated with outdoor play, causing inoperability in some cases.

  • Distinctions - Machining is crisp, giving the edges a sort of smooth bevel that is not only safe for users but also adds to the cohesion of the futuristic design language. The contrast between neon orange and the more sedate cerulean blue is extremely vivid, allowing quick identification that this is not in any way a real weapon.

Criticisms - While intentional to avoid safety hazards, the blue and orange will likely clash with almost every environment it is stored in, and most frustratingly, with other NERF products including rail-mounted and barrel accessories that the RD-6 is designed to be compatible with. Most NERF and NERF equivalent products deliberately use bright or neon colors to emphasize that the blaster is a toy, but also do run the gamut of using the most garish and uncomplimentary contrasting colors.

  • Distinctions - With an overall largely plastic design, some disassembly of the Commander RD-6 can allow it to be largely disposed of via recycling. The addition of extra darts also somewhat delays a second, potentially unnecessarily large supplementary purchase of an ammo refill.

Criticisms - Largely plastic design with vulnerable internals and cocking mechanism means a lifespan that is not lifetime, while plastic components and non-biodegradable darts mean an impact to both disposal and loss. NERF advertises its products usually outside, where darts are often lost in the heat of play, leading to more supplementary purchases of refill darts.

  • Distinctions - For cost, particularly amongst knock-off peers, the RD-6 is unbeatable, especially if it can be attained at the in-store price of around $7.49 (USD). Decent range and accuracy, as well as spare ammunition, a luxury not always found in competitors, makes this an easy choice for those looking for fun on a budget. By allowing for expansion via other NERF modular components, the RD-6 is a strong base level blaster that will likely still see staple use even for those that delve deeper into the hobby.

Criticisms - When compared to other NERF products, with albeit higher price tags, the Commander RD-6 lacks many of the more exciting elements like motorized function or included modular attachments that add to the experience.
